The Italian senate has just voted 156 for 161 against, Prime minister Romano Prodi is now the former prime minister of Italy.
Mr Prodi, who has led his centre-left coalition for 20 months, is now obliged to hand in his resignation.

Little bit more after the flip.
Prodi is out and the President has to choose what is going to happen next. If he choses to have an election..the old piece of shit is back:
Elections would be likely to favour the conservative former PM Silvio Berlusconi, who leads the coalition that defeated Mr Prodi in the Senate.
Polls suggest Mr Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia party could win comfortably, correspondents say.
BBC
This seems to be a very bad day.
And yes, i know this is short for a diary. I almost care. Fuck, Berlusconi can't be back, no! France has a right wing idiot, Italy can't bring the other right winger back.
CNN has bit more about the situation:
Now that Prodi has lost the Senate vote, Napolitano could name a new prime minister, but he will most likely call for snap elections. It is a scenario that Prodi's Senate foes have said they want to avoid.
Napolitano, too, may hope to stave off elections so he can instead work on reforming Italian electoral law. Among the changes would be limiting the ability of small parties to threaten coalition governments by dragging them through a series of confidence votes.
